What a Location!
Yoho National Park sits on the western side of the Continental Divide, where steep mountains, active glaciers, clear alpine lakes, and exposed sedimentary layers define a landscape shaped by ice, water, and time. Deep river canyons, alpine meadows, fast‑moving rivers, and several major waterfalls add to the park’s dramatic terrain. Covering more than 1,300 square kilometres and home to 28 peaks over 10,000 feet (3,000 metres), Yoho is classic Canadian Rockies wilderness at its most striking.
Within this protected area is Field, BC — a small mountain community established in 1884 during the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Its location at the base of Mount Stephen made it a vital operations point, and the nearby Spiral Tunnels, completed in 1909, still serve the rail line today.
Yoho National Park, together with the Burgess Shale fossil beds and neighbouring parks, forms the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised worldwide for its geological and paleontological significance.
